Do you hear a click-click-clicking when your pet is trotting down the hallway toward you? If so, your little – or not so little – pet is in serious need of a nail trimming. Many pet owners don’t realize the importance of regular nail trimming to their pet’s health. If you’ve been shaking your head over the television ads for the latest pet-care craze, the Pedi Paws, you might be surprised to learn just how important it is to keep your dog, cat or other pet’s nails carefully trimmed.

Why your dog needs regular nail trims

That clicking you hear when your pup walks across the tile or wood floor could be doing far more damage than you think, and not only to your gorgeous floors. Neglecting your pet’s nails can have some unexpected serious consequences for your dog. The dog injuries that result from untrimmed nails range from torn nails to arthritis.

A dog’s nails curve as they grow out. If they’re not trimmed, they’ll eventually curl under the foot where they can dig into sensitive paw pads and cause pain. Dew claws are even more prone to this kind of curling and growing in. If you’ve ever had an ingrown toenail, you can imagine how painful that is for your poor pup.

Even worse, dogs actually walk on their toes. When their nails dig painfully into their paw pads, they tend to compensate for the difficulty walking by resting their weight further back on the paw. That awkward gait puts stress and strain on all the other muscles and joints. Just as wearing the wrong shoes can result in backaches and sore knees in humans, trying to walk with uncomfortably long nails can cause joint pain and discomfort for your dog. In the worst case scenario, it can contribute to the development of arthritis and other joint problems.

In addition, long nails are more likely to be torn or injured by impact or by catching in carpets, sweaters or upholstery. When that happens, the outer enamel of the nail can tear away and expose the inner tissue, called the quick. The quick is a fleshy bit of nerve and tissue that grows outward from the bone and is surrounded by the keratin that forms the claw and nail. The quick inside is easily injured, and when it’s deprived of its protective keratin, it’s prone to infection that can travel into the dog’s foot and blood. Regular trimming reduces the chance of injury and infection.

Your cat needs regular nail trimming, too

Like dogs, cats have claws that grow in a curve and can curl under their paw pads if they’re left untrimmed. Trimming a cat’s claws offers extra benefits, though. Cats are notorious for destroying furniture by using the upholstery as a scratching post. Scratching is an instinctive behavior, and while most people think the intent is to sharpen the claws, there’s another reason that cats scratch your furniture. They have scent pads in their feet, and scratching is a way to mark their territory.

Because the scratching is so destructive, many owners of indoor cats used to choose to de-claw their kittens. The practice has been falling out of favor in recent years, though, because it leaves the cat defenseless if it happens to get outside. It’s actually illegal in many European countries, and there is a push to make it illegal in the United States.

Trimming your kitten’s claws is one far easier solution to the scratching problem. When you keep your cat’s claws trimmed short, it actually reduces the urge for them to claw furniture. Removing the sharp point also allows the cat to “scratch” without destroying furniture and upholstery. In addition, keeping the claws trimmed reduces the chance that your cat will catch a claw in the screen or upholstery and injure itself trying to get away.

Rabbits, birds and small animals also need nail trimming

Few people think of birds and nail trimming in the same breath, but many birds can be handicapped if their nails are allowed to grow too long. Birds use their claws for perching. When the nails are allowed to grow long and gnarled, it interferes with their ability to perch safely. In addition, long nails can easily catch in carpeting and clothing, with the risk of injuring the nail or the toe when trying to pull away.

Rabbits, guinea pigs and other exotic small pets also need regular mail trimming to prevent injuries both to themselves and their owners.

No matter what kind of pets you own, you have two choices when it comes to trimming their nails. The first is to have it done professionally by your veterinarian or pet groomer. Depending on the part of the country in which you live, that will cost you $8 to $15 every few weeks. Your other choice is to trim your pet’s nails at home. There are a number of tools on the market that can help you trim your pet’s nails easily at home. The newest pet grooming tool on the market is the Pedi Paws pet nail trimmer, which makes trimming pets’ nails easy and painless for both pet and owner.Do you hear a click-click-clicking when your pet is trotting down the hallway toward you?

Giant Dog breeds refers to those breeds whose height and weight classified them into largest ends of all dog breeds. Although there are no universal height or weight breed as giant, some measures will consider them as giants such as weighing from 45 kg to 80 kg when adult and reaching 80 cm at the shoulders. Giant Dogs are popular dogs for their impressive size that arouse admiration aside from being so mellow, gentle and relaxed. Peaceful, affectionate and docile, Giant dogs show absolute devotion to their owners. They make precious companions for the whole family, they can be good with children. They have remarkable courage, their ruggedness enables them to perform outstanding exploits such as legendary rescues and as excellent helpers for human in many situations.

In August 2004, a Harlequin Great Dane dog named “Gibson” from California was recognized by Guinness Book of Records as the world’s tallest dog, measuring 42.2 inches (107 cm) at the withers, he is more than 7 feet tall standing on his hind legs, he’s 170 lbs. The 17 common giant dog breeds are divided into 3 main groups:

- Mastiff Type: Bull Mastiff, Tibetan Mastiff, Dogue de Bordeaux, Mastiff, Neopolitan Mastiff, Rottweiler and Great Dane.

- Mountain Dogs: Bernese Mountain Dog, Leonberger, Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Estrela, St. Bernard, Newfoundland.

- Other Types: Anatolian Shepherd Dog, Irish Wolfhound, Komondor, Hungarian Kuvasz, Bloodhound.

The giant dog breeds grow more rapidly comparing to smaller dog breeds, they take longer to mature up to their full adult size, about 18 months to 24 months. Their lifespan is generally shorter than smaller breeds, often living around only 6 years to 10 years of age. Giant expenses more on overall, they eat more and require less exercise than smaller dogs. On health issues, giant dog has common joint problems such as hip dysplasia and arthritis, others where hypothyroidism or low thyroid function and bloat or gastric dilatation. Proper caring and support can be able to double the life spans of some gentle giant dogs like Great Danes up to 14-18 years. By catering physical and emotional needs of dogs such as like freedom going in and out of the house, just like human, proper feeding, balanced diets, scheduled exercise, caring procedures and out of harm and heat of sun. Enough shelter space is needed for them like giant dog containment fences and large heated dog beds are required to ensure quality rest and comfort.

Your bearded dragon needs a good place to live and a proper enclosure. These are some important tips you need to know when choosing the proper enclosure for your bearded dragon.

Aquarium:

it’s important that you keep your beardie in a glass aquarium and Not a wired cage. The wires are dangerous and will not supply them with the heat they require. Wired cages can cause damage to their nose and feet. The price between a glass aquarium and wired cages is not that much, so be smart and get your beardie the glass aquariu

Size:

Beardies 3 to 7 inches can be kept in a 10 gal. aquarium while 7 to 12 in. beardies can be kept in a 20 gal. tank. Beardies over a foot long, whitch is 12 in., should be kept in a 40 gal. tank. You can keep two adult beardies in a 40 gal. tank but this is not, I repeat, not recommended. Beardies also enjoy running room, beardies are very social with people and love attention.

Diet:

Beardies enjoy a wide varity of foods but theres a catch, each beardie likes different foods. Some will like fruits more than veggies. When theyr’e between the ages of 1 day old to about 9 months old you need to feed them crickets more than any thing else, start offering greens when theyr’e 4 to 6 months old. Adults whill eat greens more than crickets, beardies can also eat mealworms, kingworms(only when theyr’e adults), and much more.

Substrate:

Now this is a very tricky section, why? Because each dragon is different and it seems to depend on your region. My beardies cant stand any kind of sand, even the so called “edible” Calci-sand. When I used Calci-sand with my dragons even my Lepard Geckos, got sand impaction. I reccomend reptile carpet because its easy to clean, its inexspensive, and it comes in variety of colors and sizes.

Lighting/Tempureture:

Make sure you have a heating lamp and a uvb lamp. The uv/uvb rays provide vitamin D witch helps with the body’s ability to asorb calcium. The temp should be around 90 degrees

and 100 degrees during the day, and during the night the temp shouldn’t go below 70 degrees at all during the night, however if it does your beardie can survive one night if it drops that low then you should invest in a night heating light.

A few parting tips:

Beardies need a lid to keep your cats out, and even you dont have cats, you should still use a lid to keep insects out. You may think beardies can eat any kind of insects but this is not true. If a beardie eats a spider it will die within 24 hours. The spiders venom cont be broken down by the beardies digestive system. If want to breed them then once a week give your females a pinkie mouse with its rump dipped in calcium. Give males one pinkie mouse a month. Also the male and female should be at least a year and a half old before you breed them.

International dating sites

Several years ago we decided to enter into a free lease agreement with a woman who advertised that her aged horse was bombproof and suitable for an “absolute beginner” This suited us because we were absolute beginners and we wanted an affordable and safe way for our daughter, who was horse crazy, to learn about horses. It seemed perfect. A requirement of the agreement was that he was to be left stabled where he was, so, as we had no where to put a horse anyway it seemed like a perfect situation.

We went over to see the horse and he was beautiful…we fell in love with him (as his crafty owner no doubt knew we would) A deal was made. She threw in the bait and reeled us in good and proper. To begin with it seemed fair enough that we buy the hay…after all our daughter would be learning a lot of valuable information from this experience. As time went by, we were informed that we would have to pay for the dentist and farrier as well (we did)

We were by now, willing to do anything to continue our relationship with this beautiful old ex racehorse. Especially seeing as it wouldn’t be too long before our daughter was able to ride him…well…as soon as he was over his temporary lameness that was. In the mean time, my daughter got to work tirelessly cleaning up after the old fellow (and his owner’s other two horses as well). I know you are probably thinking things like “idiots” “suckers” etc. however, please understand that as beginners we weren’t aware that this wasn’t how it was meant to be. We thought that we owed her a debt of gratitude. We wanted to be a part of the horse world SO much but had neither the funds nor the dwelling nor the experience to even entertain the idea, so we just did what she wanted and for a long time even looked up to her for her knowledge and experience.

As agreed, we were buying the hay (she told us it was $15.00 a bale) We always gave her the money and she picked up the hay. What we didn’t know was that we were also supplying the hay for her other 2 horses as well. She was charging us $15.00 a bale and buying it for $5.00 a bale. Keep in mind that this “free lease” was now costing us around $60.00 per week as she was also charging us $30.00 for stabling (we found out that she had a deal with the property owner and she got a discount because she had 3 horses stabled there…stabling for 3 horses was costing her $30.00 per week…yep we were paying for all her horses…AGAIN.

One morning she called our house to inform us that the hinges on the horse’s stable needed replacing and (like the fools we really were at the time) we went down to the local rural supplies barn and bought lovely strong hinges (another $40.00) and then my husband fitted them. Meanwhile our daughter was still cleaning up poo, cleaning the stables, changing the water daily and still no riding.

We started to become a little suspicious when she wouldn’t allow us to bring anyone to see our horse. She became very insistent that we did not have any conversations with the stable owner either (This was because he didn’t know that we were leasing the horse in the first place…if he did she would not have had her discount on stabling any more) We weren’t allowed to visit at all unless she was present.

Then we decided to buy the hay ourselves one day and discovered what she was doing. It wasn’t long before we had her whole little scam worked out and found out that she’d done it before…in fact she did it all the time. As soon as the victims found out what she was up to and dumped her…she went fishing for a new sucker. Needless to say we learned a harsh lesson and were left feeling ripped off and red faced. As there was no written contract (another mistake) we weren’t obliged to continue and we didn’t.

Looking back on it, several years later and now owning 2 horses of our own, I feel very embarrassed to admit that we were so gullible, but while ever there are inexperienced people out there who are blinded by “horse love” and sly conniving people who are willing to take advantage of them to suit their own needs…I guarantee we won’t be the last. Just take heed, make sure you are aware of all the rules and what will be expected of you AND GET IT IN WRITING. Don’t get caught like us because honestly, there are many people willing to rip you off if you are willing to let them.

Brazilian babes

Some families like to have their dog with them while trick-or-treating for security purposes; how about dressing your buddy up for Halloween and allow him to have fun too, keeping dog Halloween safety in mind of course. With a properly trained pet, and dog-loving neighbors, it can be a family event.

Some dogs like getting dressed up and the attention they get. Those who are not party animals may become stressed. Here are some tips that may get your best friend in the mood.

Tips for Persuasion

1. Don’t wait until Halloween day, start a couple of weeks before to get your dog accustomed to the costume using treats to persuade him.

2. Let your buddy sniff around the costume, lay it over him for a minute, praise him and give him a treat. Do this several times. Every day follow this procedure, leaving the costume on longer each time.

3. Loosely put the costume on your doggy and repeat what you have done in the instructions above. A minute at first and then gradually take longer increments. Accompany this with many of treats and much praise.

4. If your dog gets nervous and agitated, and does not liking the costume idea, forget it. A doggy t-shirt, Halloween collar or bandana may be a better alternative.

Dog Halloween Costumes – Tips for Safety

1. The correct fit is important – not too tight or constricting.

2. Avoid impeding the breathing, hearing, sight, movement or barking.

3. Costume should not cause overheating.

4. The costume should be checked for things that may be poisonous or that may choke your doggy.

5. A dog should not at any time be left unattended when wearing a costume.

6. All rubber bands should be removed immediately.

Inside Safety on Halloween

1. Be mindful that your dog does not escape when you open your door to trick-or-treaters.

2. If your dog accidentally gets out, wearing a reflector could prevent injury from a car.

3. In case your dog does escape, do make sure he has an Identification tag on.

4. Think about having your friend on a leash, crated or in another room when trick and treaters are out and about.

5. Candy and wrappers will be everywhere on Halloween but they must be kept away from pets. A chew toy or a canine treat should keep him satisfied so that he does not feel left out.

Safety on Halloween – Outside

1. Every Halloween pets are injured, stolen tormented and tortured. It is important not to leave your dog outside on Halloween.

2. If you walk your dog Halloween evening, be vigilant of what he may pick up along the path.

3. Do have your dog on a lead and make sure he is wearing a collar and ID.

4. Set Jack O’Lanterns and lighted candles where they cannot be tipped over.

Shopping for Dog Halloween Costumes:

Does your dog have the temperament for trick or treating with the family?

On an average day, if someone asked you if you wanted to have chickens, you’d probably laugh at them. Most people think that the tending of farm animals ought to be left to the farmers, and are content to merely eat them. This is kind of sad, because not only is it not that hard to keep chickens, but they are actually fine pets, on par with any of the standard animals that people like to own. Everyone knows that the dog is man’s best friend, but the chicken will not only be a dearly beloved pet, but will also pay its way at the breakfast table! What more could you ask for?

1. Chickens pull their weight

Chickens can provide

Wonderful fresh eggs – from humanely kept birds in far happier conditions than most famed birds Compost for the garden from their nitrogen rich waste Natural pest control – chickens devour insects, slugs and other pests Low fat and healthy meat Intriguing pets Low maintenance and easy to nurture A great talking point for you and the neighbours

2. You dont need lots of land to keep chicken.

“More space for chickens” may be the common cry of most chicken lovers, but a few little bantams can do the trick in quite compact spaces. Successful chicken houses and runs can fit into the majority of gardens and back yards. Outbuildings or even old sheds can be transformed to perform the task. All that the chickens need is to nest in the day, space to move around and to perch at night safe from predators .

Understandably, some tenancy and housing agreements or deeds can have exclusion clauses to the keeping of poultry and specifically cockerels in urban areas. Even though in many cases you don’t need permissions or registration to keep a small flock, it is still advisable to recheck this aspect before you plan to bring some chickens home.

3. There’s no time needed to look after them

Is there just not enough time in your busy work schedule to walk a dog? No worries! Consider a chicken. Chickens never need you to stimulate them or exercise with them as long as you have them for company. Chickens will even put themselves to sleep as long as you leave some clean drinking water and chicken feed around. Plus, they’re a real treat to watch, especially the daily, after-sundown roosting ritual. A tame chicken, though, is one that gets the occasional care and attention of a caring owner. With some time and offerings of food, you’ll be able to feed them straight from your hand. Just my walk to the chicken run through a squeaky gate will trigger those chickens on a near stampede in hopes that I have some bread for them, even though we like to believe that the chickens are happy to see us.

4. Raising chickens is not expensive

Keeping any pet does have its expenses but chicks are very inexpensive unless you start getting into the fancier varieties. They are a relatively cheap pet to have and not to mention also that you will enjoy some of the best freshly laid eggs that you have ever tasted.

5. Building a chicken coop is not hard work

Well you can build yourself a chicken coop from scratch using one of the many plans available. Better however to purchase a coop ready made. There are now some very good coops and runs on the market (e.g Forsham, Taylors and Amazon to name a few) and they are widely available. Check online

6. Chickens can be tamed and are no good as pets

Chickens are intriguing. They will come to you when they see you in the morning with a spring in their step. As if they are expecting you. They will follow you around the garden and keep your company as long as you are there. They are surprisingly interested in your attention with them and you will be surprised and probably will disagree with their headless chicken reputation after you have cared for them for some time.

7. Chickens are not prone to illness

Chickens are quite robust creatures. Properly cared for, they will remain happy and healthy. If you ensure clean housing, freedom to roam and a healthy diet, they should only need minimal medical attention. The better you know your chickens, the quicker you would notice any issues they contract though it is fairly rare for them to become seriously ill. It would be advisable to research chicken husbandry to have knowledge of health concerns that affect chickens, i.e. red mite, scaly leg mites and worms. One constant danger is that of avian flu and you should monitor the DEFRA website as a safeguard. Our hope would be that you would consider chicken keeping as it is not as onerous a task as many think. The benefits include always having a conversation piece and with free-range eggs to offer, you will find your popularity soaring!
